HDPE - High-density Polyethylene

HDPE is a woven mesh (often referred to as “shade cloth”) made from 100% round monofilament HDPE yarn. HDPE Shade cloth comes in a variety of tensile strengths, material weights, and shade factors and is used for a varierty of shade applications from agricultural to architectural.  Because of its open weave, HDPE membranes are not waterproof, so are primarily used for shading in hot climates. The material comes in rolls up to 3 m wide and is fabricated by stitching rather than welding. It has a life expectancy of 5-15 years, with warranties from 5 up to 15 years, depending on grade.

  • HDPE mesh fabric
  • Commonly used for shade sails and structures
  • UV resistant and fire retardant
  • 5-15 year lifespan

With tensile strength up to 1600 N / 5cm (which is significantly lower than PVC and PTFE), a typical heavy grade commercial HDPE shade cloth, such as Commercial Heavy by Gale Pacific, can be engineered to withstand high wind loads on small to medium scale tension structures.

This high grade HPDE has biaxial stability under load, UV stability, high UV absorption. HDPE shade cloth is typically treated with flame retardants and therefore has good fire resistance.
